As a result of COVID-19 and the economic shutdown that has happened as a result, Collin County families are now suffering from two dangerous threats. First, to our collective public health; and second, to our ability to provide for our families’ basic needs. For weeks, we’ve been singularly focused on preventing the spread of COVID-19 and protecting the public health, and we’re seeing positive results from that strategy. We provide regular updates at www.CollinCountyTX.gov and at www.ChrisHill.us/COVID19, and our “Stay Home and Work Safe” measures appear to be working. I am convinced that now, more than ever, we need a strategy that addresses both threats. We must take steps to help families recover from lost jobs and lost wages while also remaining focused on keeping families healthy. We have already been planning for the day that statewide restrictions on our families and businesses are lifted and life can begin to return to normal. While we are still in the midst of what may be called “phase 1” of the response (i.e., social distancing, staying home, and avoiding large gatherings), we must actively prepare for the careful and calculated reopening of our businesses and institutions. With that in mind, last week I formed a Collin County Economic Recovery Task Force, comprised of talented business and industry experts and leaders from corporations and small businesses across the county and across various industries. I tasked this team to develop strategies to get Collin County families back to work safely and as soon as possible; and to develop ideas for city, county, and state policy makers to promote a sustainable economic recovery in Collin County. Their guidance, taken together with the advice of our medical doctors and scientists, will provide the foundation of our strategy to get Collin County families back to work. In the meantime, our entire team here at Collin County continues to work together with state and local partners in pursuit of our shared objectives of protecting both the physical health and the financial health of our families. We can, and we must, do both.
